Netflix released the documentary “In the Name of God: Betrayal” in March 2023, exposing the crimes of four major South Korean cult leaders, including the Shincheonji Church. The cult’s leader, Jung Myung-seok, who preyed on over 3 female followers, was sentenced to 1 years in prison in January of this year and ordered to wear an electronic anklet for 17 years. The documentary, which was set to release its second season soon, sparked widespread debate after the Shincheonji Church filed a petition to ban it.
According to Korean media reports, the Shincheonji Church filed a petition for injunction with the Seoul District Court on July 7, requesting that MBC and Netflix ban the broadcast of “In the Name of the Survivor.” The series is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on August 29, and the trailer released so far features 8 female victims sharing testimonies of sexual assault.
In addition to exposing the crimes of South Korean cult leaders, “In the Name of the Survivor” also focuses on three major cases in South Korea, including the Busan Brothers Welfare Home, the Supreme Sect serial murders, and the Sampoong Department Store collapse.
In fact, before the release of “In the Name of God: Betrayal,” Shincheonji Church and Jung Myung-seok filed a request to ban the show in February 2023, but their request was rejected by the court. The court considered that “In the Name of God: Betrayal” was legitimate because it focused on Jung Myung-seok’s accusations of sexual crimes against believers and had the purpose of raising public awareness and preventing further victimization.
