Reverend Peter Popoff, a lifelong evangelical preacher and faith healer whose infomercial-style revival services have been staples of late-night TV and the BET network for decades, has put his Los Angeles-area home on the market, asking just over $8.1 million. Tucked away deep within the guard-gated and famously expensive Bradbury Estates community, the fully landscaped compound consists of three structures laden with numerous custom amenities.

Built in 2000 by prolific local estate specialists Mur-Sol Builders, the mansion-sized main house offers six potential bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms in 7,300 square feet. Popoff and Liz, his wife of 50+ years, have resided in the French chateau-inspired structure for 16 years, since early 2007, when they bought the place for $4.5 million.

Since then, the Popoffs have dropped another small fortune in upgrades to the premises. The couple re-landscaped the entire 2.3-acre property, renovated multiple rooms in the mansion and installed a custom new pool, a pool house and separate standalone poolside bathroom.

Though the property lies within a 24/7 guarded enclave, it also features camera-watched front gates of its own. Beyond that, a long driveway leads across a bridge over shallow water and past formal gardens to the elegant main house, which offers an attached four-car garage and motorcourt parking for 10+ additional vehicles. The oak tree-studded grounds are undeniably magnificent, and the terraced garden areas were custom-crafted for the Popoffs and surely must cost a considerable amount to maintain.

At the house, double front doors open to a stone-floored foyer with an enormous crystal chandelier and curved staircase. Immediately to the left lies a wood-paneled library; to the right is a dining room with blue wallpaper, wainscoting and elaborate moldings. A vast living room features a vaulted ceiling and fireplace; the double-height family room is serviced by a wet bar and connects to a breakfast room area. Fully renovated, the chef’s kitchen features marble-look granite countertops, custom cabinetry and top-of-the-line Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, plus a butler’s pantry and very blue center island.

Also on the main floor is what could be a live-in housekeeper’s ensuite bedroom, though it’s currently configured as a cozy home theater/TV room. There are five additional bedrooms upstairs, all with full bathrooms, though two of them have been converted by the Popoffs into a giant walk-in closet and an executive-style office with a full wet bar, respectively. That means the house only offers three bedrooms at present, including a sumptuous master suite with carpeting, a fully renovated bathroom and its own wet bar, but that could easily be altered by the next owners.

Most of the backyard is all-new, including spacious concrete patios for al fresco entertaining. The patios surround a plunge pool with an inset spa, which is additionally flanked by a cupola-topped, 1,000-square-foot pool house with lanai sliding doors and a fireplace, plus a separate small building with a bathroom and convenient changing facilities.

Nancy Telford of Telford Real Estate holds the listing, which notes the house will transfer with HOA dues obligations of $483 per month.

Popoff, 76, first came to widespread fame and fortune in the early 1980s, conducting Charismatic Christianity-style revival services and televised faith healing. During many of his sermons, he would place hands on attendees and miraculously “cure” them of their ailments, though a 1986 episode of “The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson” exposed his use of a hidden earpiece to aid his abilities. Popoff’s popularity subsequently declined and he later declared bankruptcy, though the German-born evangelist has since rebuilt his ministry, which reportedly has received more than $20 million in donations during a single year.

In addition to their for-sale estate, records show the Popoffs also own at least three large warehouses in Upland, Calif., about 20 miles east of Bradbury.

  1. This guy was exposed as a con man and fraud years ago, but nevertheless recovered and regained his cash flow. It’s sick how televangelists like Popoff fleece their flock.
