OROVILLE, Calif. — A religious cult leader from Oroville was supposed to be sentenced in a Butte County courtroom on Tuesday, but the date was pushed.

Sansue Bee Vang was found guilty in February by a jury of eight counts of child molestation and three counts of rape after a seven-day trial.

Vang created, founded and led a Hmong religious organization called Kev Ntseeg Leej Niam Kee Tiam Vaj Lis Thum in Oroville after starting it in Wisconsin. He then moved to Fresno, selecting families from numerous locations to relocate to Oroville. He created readings, songs, and other items for the organization and was referred to as a “prophet” by his followers. Vang was found to have molested four young girls and raped two women, all of whom were members of the organization when the sexual assaults took place.

On Tuesday, the prosecution informed the court that numerous victims wish to speak, with some providing written statements for the judge to consider during sentencing.

Only one victim spoke Tuesday afternoon, sharing how the attacks have left her and her family feeling “scared, anxious, and traumatized.”

Vang will return to court on June 9. He is facing a potential sentence of life in prison.
