What is sanity within a cult controlled environment?

What we think of as “insane” is normalized within a tightly controlled cult environment. Often isolated and out of contact with family and old friends the cult member relies upon those around him/her to determine what represents sanity and reality.
The article linked here reflects what people outside of cult think looking in, but for cult members what we call “insane” is their new normal, sustained and reinforced by the leader and other cult members. This is why information and outside social contact is frequently restricted and/or discouraged, which keeps cult members in a artificially controlled alternate reality.
