A court has granted temporary release to Han Hak-ja, leader of the Unification Church, who has been standing trial in custody while citing deteriorating health.

According to legal circles on Wednesday, the 27th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Woo In-sung) decided the previous day to suspend Han’s detention.

The suspension period runs until 2 p.m. on June 30, and the court reportedly required her to remain only at the hospital where she is receiving treatment.

Detention suspension is a system that allows temporary release of a defendant when urgent grounds for release are recognized, such as serious illness, childbirth or attending a family funeral.

Detention suspension is a system that temporarily releases a defendant when urgent grounds exist, such as serious illness, childbirth or a family funeral. The decision takes effect immediately and, unlike bail, carries no separate conditions.

The court had previously granted detention suspensions for Han twice before, considering her health condition. Han was released for three days in November last year and for 10 days last month, each time to receive hospital treatment.

Han was arrested and indicted in October last year on charges including destroying evidence after receiving police gambling investigation information from People Power Party lawmaker Kwon Sung-dong in October 2022, along with Yoon Young-ho, former head of the Unification Church’s global headquarters, and others.

She also faces charges of making split donations totaling 144 million won ($105,000) from Unification Church funds to People Power Party lawmakers between April and July 2022, and of involvement in lobbying for church-related issues by delivering an expensive necklace and a Chanel bag to first lady Kim Keon-hee through Jeon Seong-bae, known by the Buddhist alias Geonjin Beopsa.
