The “JMS” Scandal that Rocked the Entertainment Industry: Stars Publicly Leave the Cult

Public awareness of cults has heightened after reports surfaced that a woman who escaped from the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS), known for committing sexual crimes against its followers, was sued for distributing illegal footage while trying to convince her friend by showing videos of the victims.
Two years ago today, celebrities who faced controversy after being revealed to be JMS followers began publicly certifying their departure from JMS.
On March 13, 2023, actor Kang Ji-sub posted on his personal channel “Why did I even keep this in storage when I should have thrown it away a long time ago?” along with a photo of him discarding a painting of Jesus, which had led to suspicions about his involvement with JMS.
The day before, he had also stated, “I am posting this with the hope that there will never be another victim. (JMS) was a place I went to during a difficult time, purely with the intention of praying.” He clarified that he had left JMS five years ago (in 2018). However, despite his explanation, criticism continued, leading Kang Ji-sub to delete his personal channel.
Kyoungyoon, a member of the group DKZ at the time, also made a statement after allegations arose that his parents’ café had been used for JMS missionary activities.
On March 13, 2023, in an interview with Dispatch, Kyoungyoon revealed, “My parents attended JMS for over 20 years, and I was born into it.” He continued, “Recently, I watched ‘In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal’ and saw the part where (JMS leader) said, ‘I am the Messiah.’ I realized then that he was insane, but I didn’t know at the time.“
Through tears, he admitted, “I regret everything so much that I wish I could turn back time. Although it’s late, I am officially leaving JMS now.” Despite his declaration, he later withdrew from the group DKZ.
