30th August 2025 – (Hong Kong) Maple Yip, wife of Hong Kong artist Alex Fong, has shared her harrowing experience of being brainwashed by a cult in her newly released Korean-language autobiography. This follows her previous appearance in the Netflix documentary “In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal,” where she disclosed the abuse she suffered at the hands of South Korean cult leader Jung Myung-seok, sparking widespread attention.
In a recent interview for Netflix’s new series “The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea’s Tragedies,” Yip opened up about the public backlash she faced after revealing her story, expressing her emotional distress in response to accusations that she was seeking fame.
In her autobiography, titled “Traces,” Yip details her journey from being recruited into the cult as a teenager to ultimately breaking free and pursuing legal action against her abuser. She hopes her narrative will serve as a warning to others and encourages readers to recognise the dangers of manipulative groups.
Yip emphasised the importance of her story, stating, “This book chronicles my experiences from the age of 16 and 17, detailing my indoctrination, the process of escaping the cult, and my eventual lawsuit. I aim to help others understand the potential risks and avoid similar paths.” She further highlighted that there are many controlling groups in society, urging people to be vigilant and assist those who may be trapped.
Yip’s husband, Alex Fong, announced their marriage on Valentine’s Day this year. The couple has recently shared joyful news about expecting their first child. Fong recently participated in the 2025 World Masters Swimming Championship, where he celebrated winning his first gold medal, with Yip cheering him on from the sidelines.
