More arrests were made involving members of an alleged cult-like religious organization in Southern California, including the group’s leaders, on suspicion of murder.

The Hemet-based religious group called “His Way Spirit Led Assemblies” has been at the center of an ongoing investigation after two former members, Emilio Ghanem, 40, and Ruben Moreno, 49, were reported missing in 2019 and 2023, respectively.

On Dec. 11, Redlands police arrested six members of the group, including its leaders Darryl Muzic Martin, 58, his wife, Shelly Bailey “Kathryn” Martin, 62, and high-ranking member Rudy Moreno, 43, for murder and gun charges at the group’s headquarters.

The other three suspects, a 44-year-old woman and two 58-year-old men, were arrested on various weapons-related charges, according to booking records.

Shelly and Rudy were arrested in connection with Ghanem’s case. Darryl was arrested in connection with Moreno’s case.

It’s been several years since either Emilio Ghanem or Ruben Moreno was seen alive. Ruben went missing in 2017 and was last seen at a Claremont residence associated with “His Way Spirit Led Assemblies.”

Ghanem was last seen alive at a Starbucks in Redlands in 2023.

According to his family, Ghanem spent the last two decades of his life as a devout member of the religious group, whose members worked at a pest control company called Fullshield Inc., now known as “Maxguard,” according to the Redlands Police Department.

In April 2023, Ghanem left both the religious group and MaxGuard behind and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to reunite with his family and begin a new chapter in his life. His sisters said Ghanem had started his own pest control company in Nashville and went back to SoCal to open a satellite office with the intent of recapturing some of his old clients.

His family claimed the move drew the attention of Maxguard, which served him with a cease and desist letter on May 8, 2023, accusing him of competing with the company for business.
