The wild life of a 1920s cult leader who started a colony near Nanaimo, scammed his followers, then escaped on a tugboat will be explored at the Nanaimo Museum next week.

Brother XII [Twelve], real name Edward Arthur Wilson, was a self-proclaimed English mystic who started a colony in Cedar-by-the-Sea in the late 1920s. He attracted a following of disciples, mostly wealthy socialites who funded the colony, but they eventually revolted against him as his behaviour became increasingly disturbing.

He escaped to Europe with his mistress, allegedly with a large fortune of gold, and may have faked his death.

The Nanaimo Museum will be hosting two history-filled talks next week, salacious details included.
