Trial for accused DeKalb cult leader delayed after court official tests positive for COVID-19

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The trial for an accused cult leader in DeKalb County will recess until Thursday morning because a courtroom official tested positive for COVID-19.
Eligio Bishop is accused of raping a female follower and posting that woman’s nude pictures online. Several witnesses, including a former follower of the alleged polygamist group Carbon Nation, have already testified.
On Tuesday, Bishop voiced concerns in the courtroom about his health and about his own attorney.
Bishop questioned the judge about the positive COVID case and said he didn’t want to be in the room anymore for fear of exposure. The judge gave Bishop the option to sit in the back.
Bishop also briefly decided he didn’t want his attorney anymore and told the judge he wasn’t being treated fairly. The judge gave Bishop the options of either proceeding with his attorney or representing himself.
Bishop ultimately chose to keep his counsel and stay in the courtroom for the remainder of the trial.
