Before he became notorious for murdering his wife and two stepchildren, Chad Daybell was known as a religious man with a large family, including five children.
Chad and his first wife, Tammy Daybell, shared sons Garth, Seth and Mark Daybell, as well as daughters Leah Murphy and Emma Murray.
Years after starting their family, Chad and his second wife, Lori Vallow, were both convicted of killing her two children, 17-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua “J.J.” Vallow. The couple were reportedly devout believers in their own doomsday prophecies, with Chad allegedly declaring Lori’s children were “zombies” with “dark spirits.”
In addition to murdering Tylee and J.J., Chad killed Tammy, while Lori conspired to murder her ex-husband. Despite mounting evidence against Chad, including Lori’s children’s remains being found on his property, his own children believe he is innocent.

Chad is a former professional gravedigger who became a self-published author of doomsday-themed books. Lori was a fan and avid reader of his books, and they met at a conference in Utah in October 2018. At the time, Lori was still married to Charles Vallow and Chad to Tammy. The two reportedly began an affair after meeting.
In February 2019, Charles filed for divorce from Lori, alleging she abandoned him and J.J. for 58 days. That July, Lori’s brother, Alex Cox, shot Charles to death, alleging it was in self-defense, and was never charged with a crime. He died in December.
In August 2019, Chad and Lori moved to Rexburg, Idaho. On Sept. 8, 2019, Tylee was last seen on a family trip to Yellowstone National Park; J.J. was last seen alive on Sept. 22. On Oct. 19, Tammy was found dead in the home she shared with Chad and their children, who say she went to bed early the night before with a cough, per NBC News. The Daybells refused an autopsy at the time.
