True Crime Con 2025: Cult survivors share stories in Savannah this weekend

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – True Crime Con is returning to Savannah this weekend, and this year’s convention is taking a deep dive into the dark and complex world of cults.
Hosted by the Graveface Museum, the one-day event will be held Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Savannah Convention Center. The convention will feature a wide range of panelists – including survivors and former cult members who will offer firsthand accounts and analysis of some of the most infamous cults in American history.
This year’s panel lineup includes discussions on Heaven’s Gate, Jonestown and the Manson Family. Panelists will explore the psychological, social and historical factors that led people to join the cults – as well as the lasting impact on those who escaped.
“We think these things should be talked about and learned from, rather than buried or ignored,” Graveface Museum co-owner Chloë Manon said. “Dark parts of history certainly exist, it’s important to hear from people who were personally impacted.”
Among the featured speakers is Eugene Smith, a Jonestown survivor who lost his wife, child and mother in the 1978 mass suicide. Smith will speak publicly for the first time in an in-person panel. Also appearing is investigative journalist and author Tom O’Neill, whose research challenges the official narrative surrounding the Manson Family.
