Trial of Chad Daybell: what you missed from the last week

Boise, ID (CBS2) — The triple murder trial of Chad Daybell continued this week with more of his family taking the stand.
Monday started with a difficult testimony for jurors who were shown photos of where and how JJ and Tylee’s remains were found on Chad Daybell’s property. The photos were not shown to the public. FBI Special Agent Steve Daniels showed jurors photos from where the bodies of both children were found, including a firepit that contained Tylees’ remains.
Melani Palowski, Lori Vallow Daybell’s niece, took the stand. She testifies that Chad was responsible for labeling JJ and Tylee as “dark,” and being possessed by dark spirits.
Ian Palowski, Melani’s now ex-husband, also testified. Palowski became increasingly suspicious of Chad and Lori after learning that JJ and Tylee were missing, and neither of them was helping find them with the police. Palowski eventually agreed to record phone calls between him and his then-wife Melani, Chad, and Lori. Several snippets from those recorded phone calls were played for jurors as Ian explained the ever-changing rules of how Chad and Lori seemed to see the world. At one point in a recorded call, Chad and Lori explained how they felt like several of the Rexburg Police Detectives investigating them were “dark,” a reference to their belief that dark or evil spirits possessed someone. Several people whom Chad and Lori called “dark,” died, including JJ, Tylee, Tammy, and Charles Vallow.
