One of the most notorious examples of a cult was the People’s Temple, which came to a very auspicious end on November 18th, 1978, in Jonestown, Guyana.

Infamous cult leader Jim Jones encouraged more than 900 of his followers to drink poison mixed into a beverage called “Flavor Aid,” a Kool-Aid alternative. The expression “drinking the Kool-Aid” has been used to refer to anyone who accepts a doctrine without question (and, I suspect, to one’s detriment).

A cult is usually defined as:

“A group or movement with a shared commitment, usually adhering to an extreme ideology. A charismatic leader often leads the cult. Cults can be religious, political, or social, and they often exert significant control over their members’ lives, including their beliefs, behaviors, and relationships.”

Once a person joins a cult, it’s usually extremely difficult or even impossible to leave. The groups are masters in psychological manipulation, and their leaders and members use fear and isolation to maintain control over their members.
