It was reported on the 26th that Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki’s team, which is investigating various suspicions surrounding Mrs. Kim Keon-hee, has detected circumstances indicating that the Unification Church supported Rep. Kim Ki-hyun in the 2023 People Power Party leadership election.
According to legal sources on that day, the special counsel team reportedly secured text messages exchanged between former Unification Church World Mission Headquarters head Yoon Young-ho and Jeon Sung-bae, also known as ‘Geonjin Beopja’, regarding the matter. In early February 2023, Jeon sent a message to Yoon stating, “They say to finalize the party leader as Kim Ki-hyun, and the supreme council members as Park Sung-jung, Jo Soo-jin, and Jang Ye-chan,” and Yoon reportedly replied, “I will instruct them to move.” Indeed, Rep. Kim was elected party leader, and Reps. Jo Soo-jin and Jang Ye-chan were each elected as supreme council members.
The special counsel team is investigating whether there were actual discussions, believing that Jeon conveyed Mrs. Kim’s intentions to the Unification Church. However, Mrs. Kim’s side stated, “This was a one-sided conversation between the two individuals, and Mrs. Kim was completely unaware of the content and did not receive any such communication.”
Earlier, the special counsel team also identified circumstances suggesting that the two individuals attempted to mobilize Unification Church followers to elect Rep. Kwon Seong-dong as party leader. At the time, Yoon asked Jeon via text message, “What exactly is the Yoon heart?” and “What scale is needed for the party convention?”, and Jeon reportedly replied, “The Yoon heart remains unchanged as Kwon (Seong-dong).” However, when Rep. Kwon declared he would not run in the party leadership election, the special counsel team suspects that the target of support was changed to Rep. Kim.
Additionally, the special counsel team reportedly secured mobile phone text messages containing circumstances suggesting that Yoon, through Jeon, solicited support for the Unification Church’s Mekong River development project in Cambodia and attempted to take Mrs. Kim to Cambodia.
