Police Raid Home of Unification Church Ex-Chairman Song Kwang-seok

The investigation team from the National Police Agency’s National Office of Investigation, which is probing allegations of lobbying by the Unification Church in political circles, raided the home of Song Kwang-seok, former chairman of the Heavenly Parent’s Peace Alliance (UPF), a subsidiary of the Unification Church, on the 2nd. Song also concurrently served as an executive in the World Peace Congress Members Alliance and the Peace Road Foundation, both subsidiaries of the Unification Church, and has been in contact with key politicians from both ruling and opposition parties.”
Song was indicted on the 31st of last month on charges of illegally donating 13 million Korean won from Unification Church funds to the support committees of 11 lawmakers in early 2019 (violation of the Political Funds Act). Earlier, the police referred four individuals, including Song, Han Hak-ja, former global head Yun Young-ho, and former chief secretary Jeong Won-ju, to prosecutors with a recommendation for indictment. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office indicted only Song and requested the police to conduct supplementary investigations into the remaining three.
On the same day last month, the police also raided the home of former secretary Jeong in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, and the special counsel team investigating former first lady Kim Keon-hee. However, this raid is reportedly related to allegations that three individuals—Democratic Party lawmaker Chun Jae-soo, former Democratic Party lawmaker Lim Jong-seong, and former United Future Party lawmaker Kim Kyu-hwan—received cash and luxury watches, among other valuables, from the Unification Church around 2018–2020. This case is separate from Song’s charges of violating the Political Funds Act.
