HALFMOON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Keith Raniere, the founder of the Capital Region-based sex cult NXIVM, has been denied a new trial. Per court documents, Raniere was found guilty of racketeering, conspiracy, sex trafficking, wire fraud conspiracy, and more, and is currently serving a 120-year prison sentence which started in 2020.

An appeals court upheld his conviction in December 2022.

Raniere motion for a judge’s disqualification was denied in January 2023. The defense team for the founder of the Capital Region-based sex cult NXIVM claimed Judge Nicholas Garaufis is biased and did not want him involved in a new trial.
