Marilyn Manson Has A Messianic Image And Skills To Be A Cult Leader, ‘Marilyn Manson: Unmasked’ Director Explains

In a recent interview with NME, ‘Marilyn Manson: Unmasked’ director Karen McGann talked about the documentary.
When asked if she would consider Manson a cult leader, the director responded, “He had that ability to create this extraordinary devotion in people. There is definitely something cult-like about the devotion that he managed to get from his fans,” she explained. “He had extraordinary charisma. You look at forums now and there are countless accounts of people who are very vocal supporters of him. There is something kind of messianic about him and I think he very much leaned into that in the construction of his own image in the ‘90s.”
“He’s a smart individual and understood that he could represent something to people who felt underrepresented or disenfranchised. He made a very successful career out of that. Many of [his supporters] will be people who supported him in the ‘90s. And, I think, new fans as well,” she added.
‘Marilyn Manson: Unmasked’ is the second Channel 4 series to accuse a male celebrity of predatory behavior. The first series made serious allegations against comedian-turned-YouTube star Russell Brand.
The documentary on Manson follows previous accusations made by his ex-partner, Evan Rachel Wood, in 2021. She wrote on Instagram, “The name of my abuser is Brian Warner, also known to the world as Marilyn Manson. He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years. I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission.”
Wood’s statement eventually cost Manson his career, and both his label and booking agent dropped him. In the second episode of the documentary, Wood repeats these claims. The first episode focuses on Manson’s rise to fame in the South Florida rock scene, where he gained a following of teenage girls.
Jennifer Pavao, one of the fans who followed Manson’s band, said, “He was very charismatic and I was drawn to that.” She recalled her father’s concern about Manson calling his underage daughter late at night, and now, years later, she reflected on her admiration for him differently. “Charles Manson and his family – it does strike a chord,” she added.
In the second part, Wood talks about meeting Warner when she was 18, and he was in his 30s. Although she didn’t feel he had a romantic interest in her at the time, their relationship became intimate, and she says she became psychologically dependent on him. She recalled, “[There were] at least three different versions of him… I never really knew which one I was waking up to.”
