A manhunt is underway in multiple American states for people belonging to a cultlike group of pseudo-intellectuals known as the Zizians, who have been linked to six deaths.
One member was arrested and another killed after a traffic stop escalated into a shootout with border patrol officers in Vermont on Monday. A law enforcement agent, David Maland, was shot dead during the confrontation.
The FBI said that Teresa Youngblut, 21, had been charged with Maland’s death. Her deceased alleged crime partner was identified as Felix Bauckholt, also referred to as Ophelia, a 26-year-old German national.
The agency had closed in on Youngblut and Bauckholt in Coventry, a town 20 miles from the border with Canada, when they opened fire.
Other crimes attributed to the Zizians include the murder of a wealthy married couple in Pennsylvania and a pair of vicious knife attacks on a landlord in California.
They have been described as a radical “death cult” of pseudo-intellectuals with tech knowledge from Berkeley. Some members reportedly worked at Google and Nasa.
The group’s apparent leader, Jack Amadeus “Ziz” LaSota, 34, and three followers remain on the run, police said. Three other members have been arrested on murder charges.
