Maina Njenga: Court drops all charges against ex-Mungiki leader over lack of evidence

Nakuru—A court in Nakuru has dismissed cases against former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga and his co-accused.
On Monday, November 11, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) filed an application seeking to withdraw all charges against Njenga and others.
In his ruling, Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibellion ordered the file against the former Mungiki sect leader to be closed, pointing out that the prosecution admitted they had no evidence to sustain the case.
His application, DPP Renson Ingonga, stated that 20 witnesses who were lined up to testify were not willing to testify in court due to their relations with the accused person.
Supporters of the former Mungiki leader burst into song at the Nakuru Law Courts after he was acquitted of criminal charges.
Addressing his supporters outside the court, Njenga appeared to point an accusing finger at former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.
According to Njenga, those who engineered the charges against him were also facing court cases.
The former Mungiki leader faced a spate of charges, including seven counts of being a leader and member of the outlawed Mungiki, planning and coordinating criminal activities, and possessing illegal firearms and drugs.
