Leader of secretive church returning to Australia for ‘extended break’

The leader of a secretive religious group has announced he’s stepping back from his role, citing a “tough year” and “constant pressure”.
Wayne Dean, who oversees a church commonly referred to as the Two By Twos or The Truth – though it has no official name – has been leading its New Zealand branch for the past three years. Originally from Western Australia, Dean is now returning home for what he describes as “an extended break”.
The church is currently under investigation by New Zealand police for alleged sexual offending.
In a letter emailed to the group’s roughly 2500 members, Dean wrote: “Constant pressure or force on anything eventually has an effect. It brings me no pleasure to have to say that again I feel the need for a break. This has not come at a good time.”
He explained that while he was scheduled to attend conventions in Western Australia – just as he did last year – these events, though meaningful, don’t offer the rest he needs.
“As wonderful as conventions are for us, they are not a break.”
Dean said the decision to return to Australia felt like the wisest move, allowing him to spend time with siblings and close friends in a familiar setting.
“This way I can take the time needed to see the way forward.”
He also expressed gratitude for his time in New Zealand.
“I’ve been glad for every field I have been in and getting to know you. I’m sorry there are still some of you that I haven’t met yet. But we are thankful for the same Spirit that unites us.”
Tim Hamilton will take over as overseer in New Zealand, while Australian overseer Trevor Joll is expected to travel to New Zealand next month for conventions – large annual gatherings that span several days and include preaching, personal testimonies, fellowship, and worship.
In August, the church released three documents aimed at offering “possible pathways for those affected by sexual harm.”
