The joint police-prosecution investigation team looking into alleged collusion between the Unification Church and the Shincheonji Church of Jesus has summoned former Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Im Jongsung, who is suspected of receiving money and valuables.

The joint investigation team summoned Im as a suspect on the morning of the 11th and is questioning him.

Im is suspected of receiving 30 million won in cash and other valuables from the Unification Church around the time of the April 2020 general election. Im served as the Korea chair of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), founded by the Unification Church, and hosted debates that took up as agenda items projects long pursued by the Unification Church, including the push for a Japan-Korea undersea tunnel.

In addition, a document titled “TM (True Mother) Special Report” prepared by Unification Church executives for President Hak Ja Han is also said to contain content stating that Im helped the Unification Church’s water resources project in Kyrgyzstan.

Im is also reported to have been listed among the names on the Unification Church’s “split donations” roster. Around the time of the “World Summit 2020,” the Unification Church provided political funds to dozens of figures from both the ruling and opposition parties, and the joint investigation team suspects that Im also received donations at that time.

The joint investigation team plans to question Im on Wednesday about all the allegations, including the suspected receipt of money and valuables. Im denies all the charges, including the alleged receipt of money and valuables.
