Charles Manson, the leader of the notorious ‘Manson Family’ cult which committed a series of violent murders in 1969, is the topic of a new Netflix documentary, Chaos: The Manson Murders.

But what was it really like to be part of Charles Manson’s cult, The Family? One member, Dianne Lake, sadly knows far too well. She ended up as one of the witnesses who helped to put Manson in prison in 1971, and later went on to write a book about her experiences.

Charles Manson died in prison aged 83, in November 2017. The cult leader, who infamously had a swastika tattooed on his forehead, died of natural causes after having been admitted to Bakersfield hospital, California.
