A woman who survived a cult has spoken out about the toxic culture inside the group – saying that babies were taken from their mothers and forced into marriage as children.
Serena Kelley, 40, was born into the Children of God – a religious organisation founded by David Berg that has widely been denounced as a cult.
Her mother, Sara, was a senior leader in the group and Serena herself was given up as a wife to the leader when she was just three – and at his side she witnessed countless horrors.
Serena was raised by strangers and given a cult name, Mary Dear. Comics were even made by the organisation about her childhood, and she became a quasi-celebrity amongst the followers of the Children of God.
But Serena recognised the group for what it was and as soon as she was old enough, she ran away and started a new life.
