Crews work on demolishing former Trinity Broadcasting Network headquarters in Costa Mesa

For a long time, the property gleamed in the daylight with its white, ornate facade against lush green landscaping and often at night, as well, with twinkling holiday lights attached to almost every surface.
The former headquarters of the Trinity Broadcasting Network, the 6.12-acre campus caught the attention of plenty of southbound drivers on the 405 Freeway as they passed through Costa Mesa.
And maybe this week, they’ve noticed the property again, as crews demolished the complex on Bear Street near South Coast Plaza that was once home to the largest Christian media company in the world.
Purchased in 1996 by Trinity Broadcast Network founders Paul and Jan Crouch, the property was sold in 2017 by the network amid struggles following the death of Paul in 2013 and Jan in 2016.
The 65,000-square-foot, three-story main building still featured a grand staircase and ornate decor, including hand-painted frescos on the ceilings and marble flooring, when it was sold to a group planning an international school. Outside, there were fountains, a rotunda and manicured lawns.
In the years that followed, it was sold again and most recently used as an event space. In the fall, the City Council approved a proposal to demolish the complex altogether and replace it with a 142-unit residential development of mostly townhouses, but also 20 single-family homes and at least seven units reserved as affordable to very-low-income households.
