Han Hakja, President of the Unification Church, who had been indicted and detained over alleged collusion between the Unification Church and political circles and was then temporarily released, requested an extension of her release period, but the request was denied.
According to the legal community on the 21st, the 27th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Woo Inseong) rejected Han’s request the previous day to extend the suspension of her detention. As a result, Han is reported to have returned to the Seoul Detention Center by 2:00 p.m. that day.
Earlier, on the 11th, the court conditionally accepted Han’s request for a suspension of detention on health grounds. A suspension of detention is a system under which a defendant is temporarily released when it is recognized that there is an urgent reason for release, such as serious illness, childbirth, or attending a family funeral.
After being temporarily released, Han is said to have received treatment for injuries from a fall that occurred inside the detention center. On the 19th, her side asked the court to extend the suspension period of her detention. Previously, in November last year, she had once applied for a suspension of detention, which the court granted, allowing her to be released for three days to receive treatment at a hospital.
Han was indicted and taken into custody in October last year on charges of conspiring with Yoon Youngho, former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters, to deliver 100 million won in political funds to People Power Party lawmaker Kweon Seongdong in January 2022, while asking for support for the Unification Church from the Yoon Suk Yeol administration.
