One of the first men convicted of coercive control in Ireland is back in prison after abusing his former partner again following his release.

The Irish Independent reports Tullamore Circuit Court heard from an undertaker of Martin Mulqueen’s attempt to buy a double grave described as an underground vault for him and his victim.

In March 2021, 57 year old Mr Mulqueen, originally from Ballynote, Kilrush, in Clare was handed a combined sentence of 54 months after he pleaded guilty to three sample charges, including coercive control, assault and assault causing harm on dates between March and October 2019.

Mr. Mulqueen resumed his relationship with his victim who subsequently applied for a barring order.

Judge Keenan Johnson re-activated the 20-month suspended portion of Mulqueen’s sentence.
