Allison Mack, the actress who starred in the TV show “Smallville” and was an influential member of the cult NXIVM, is now talking about her role during her time with the group.
Speaking on the podcast “Allison After NXIVM,” Mack says she used her fame as a way to recruit new members and to influence their behavior, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“I think that I capitalized on the things I had. And so the success I had as an actor, I think I did capitalize on that, yeah,” Mack says, according to EW. “And it was a power tool that I had to get people to do what I wanted. … I think that I was very effective in moving Keith’s (Raniere) vision forward.”
Raniere was the co-founder and leader of NXIVM, which was based in Albany, N.Y. The group presented itself as a “self-help and professional development organization.” Members would spend large amounts of money for courses in order to advance in the organization.
However, an investigation revealed the group had a secret organization in which women were branded and coerced into having sex with Raniere. Raniere was convicted of racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, and several other charges in 2019 and was sentenced to 120 years in prison.
Mack was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 on charges she manipulated women into becoming sex slaves for Raniere.
According to the podcast, Mack, 43, says she was introduced to NXIVM in 2006 by “Smallville” co-star Kristin Kreuk. She quickly became enamored with Raniere and “became part of a harem of women who serviced his every need,” Variety reports.
Mack soon was encouraging other women to have sex with Raniere, Variety reports. She controlled how many women lived, including their diets, which were minimal.
“I made choices I will forever regret,” Mack said during her sentencing in 2021.
“I am sorry to those of you that I brought into NXIVM,” she wrote in a letter filed with the court last week. “I am sorry I ever exposed you to the nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes of a twisted man.”
