If walls could talk, this grand Federation mansion in Fremantle would have a wild tale to tell.
Today it’s a genteel five-bedroom home at the heart of the city’s heritage precinct.
But 40 years ago, it was a hub for the Rajneesh community – a religious movement also known as the ‘Orange People’.
Its founder was the guru Osho Rajneesh.
Adherents wore orange-coloured robes and many lived in intentional communities where free love and communal childcare were practised.
The Rajneeshees moved into the Fremantle Trades Hall in 1981. For the next six years, they operated a restaurant called ‘Zorba the Buddha’ from the premises.
But within years, the movement was mired in controversy.
