The Indo Daily: ‘How a cult brainwashed me – and how I escaped’

Ian Haworth has spent a lifetime warning of the dangers of cults, after his own terrifying experience. He talks to the Indo Daily podcast about what happened, and how he managed to escape. Host: Ciarán Dunbar. Guest: Ian Haworth
When examples of cults spring to mind, we think of David Koresh and the Waco Siege, the Manson Family, and people like Jim Jones, who convinced 918 of his followers to kill themselves and their children.
But those are extreme examples that might give the impression that cults are much rarer than they are, and most people believe that they could never be brainwashed into a cult or be totally enthralled by a cult leader.
Yet thousands of people find themselves in that situation every year.
Ian Haworth was one of those who fell victim to such a group. He managed to escape but has since spent a lifetime warning of the dangers of cults – running the Cult Information Centre charity.
Ciarán Dunbar hears his story.
