The Onion says it won’t wait for the courts, will launch Infowars to pay Sandy Hook families

The families of children and educators killed in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School are set to receive their first payment from Alex Jones’ Infowars empire next month, after years of legal wrangling over more than $1.4 billion in defamation judgments against the far-right conspiracist. The money won’t be coming from Jones, though, but from The Onion, the satirical publisher angling to take over the Infowars brand in support of the Sandy Hook families.
The Onion doesn’t yet have permission to publish under the Infowars brand, and Jones is fighting the takeover in court. Nevertheless, The Onion plans to launch its new version of Infowars on July 2, CEO Ben Collins wrote in a staff memo shared with MS NOW. The new website and social media channels will feature original programming, including a parody of Jones’ old show, and will route more than $100,000 to the Sandy Hook families, an initial payment drawn from rainbow-colored Infowars merchandise The Onion has sold in anticipation of its takeover.
