The Clearwater City Council hosted a special meeting Thursday evening to learn more details about the Church of Scientology’s downtown redevelopment plans along Cleveland Street.
But the people behind the projects didn’t provide much information that isn’t already publicly available for something that has been nearly a decade in the making.
“We’ll navigate whatever political landscape or questions that are being posed by the greater community,” Scott Dobbins, who oversees tenant recruitment for the Cleveland Street projects, said after the meeting. “We’re not here to hide.”
Following the announcement of a proposed $50 million entertainment center in downtown Clearwater last month, the City Council had questions for the church-affiliated company behind the effort: the Cleveland Street Alliance, which is working on 42 storefronts.
Dobbins, founder and principal of a commercial real estate firm in Tampa, said the limited liability company, which he manages, is a coalition of the Church of Scientology, its parishioners and development professionals.
