CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater city leaders are holding a major workshop Thursday focused on what could be a $350 million redevelopment effort in the city’s downtown.

The special session brings together city officials, development partners and the public to discuss proposals tied to multiple properties owned by the Church of Scientology.

City Councilmember Mike Mannino said the scale of what’s being proposed is unprecedented for Clearwater. At one point, more than 40 permits were in play for demolition and construction connected to the projects.

Leaders say the workshop is designed to walk through those plans in a public setting by outlining what’s proposed, what it could look like and how it may impact downtown businesses and residents.

“This is about bringing clarity,” Mannino said. “Having open, honest dialogue in the sunshine so people understand what’s happening and where we are moving as a city.”

Mannino said the meeting also responds to years of feedback from residents who have called for more transparency around development efforts in downtown Clearwater.

Representatives from Scientology, the Cleveland Street Alliance and other development partners are expected to take part in the discussion, giving the public an opportunity to hear directly from those involved.

City leaders say bringing everyone into the same room is a key step toward improving communication, reducing confusion and building trust as Clearwater continues to grow and evaluate what could be one of its largest redevelopment efforts.
