A Moldovan woman and an Italian were arrested in Perugia, Italy, following an investigation by prosecutors targeting a group considered one of the most dangerous crypto-Christian sects in the country. They were accused of forming an illegal association under the guise of a spiritual organization, named ‘Conoscenza è libertà’ (Knowledge and Freedom).
Following a journalistic investigation, the police intervened, and the two suspects refused to provide statements in front of the judge. A former follower of the sect reported on the methods of control and manipulation used, including the prohibition of attending funerals and exorbitant financial demands for spiritual advancement.
Weird rituals were also mentioned, such as simulated funerals and the consumption of drinks with bodily fluids. Investigators discovered that followers were encouraged to sever ties with family and friends, being threatened with severe spiritual repercussions. The two suspects requested release, but the judge decided on preventive detention for serious crimes, including criminal conspiracy and sexual assault.
