When Colman Domingo almost accidentally joined a cult: “What’s up with you guys?”

There seems to be a strong correlation between famous people and cults, which is unsurprising, really, when you think about how normal the idolatry of stars, whether they’re musicians or actors, has become.

It’s one thing to devote yourself to a celebrity with unadulterated love, but it’s another to actually join a cult, which have sadly plagued the entertainment industry for decades, the most infamous being the Manson Family, its members reigning terror over Los Angeles when they killed various people, including actor Sharon Tate, in 1969, bringing the decade to a tragic end.

Then there’s the horrific cult that Joaquin Phoenix and his siblings, including River, found themselves in as children, known as The Children of God, or sometimes The Family International, notorious for its sexual abuse of children, where even Rose McGowan, another future celebrity found herself in as a child, with her father even running the Italian branch.

These days, when we think of cults and celebrities, Scientology comes to mind first, although members will tell you it’s but a religion. This is hotly debated, of course, and many famous people who identify as Scientologists are subject to scrutiny for engaging with the organisation, from Tom Cruise and John Travolta to Elisabeth Moss and Giovanni Ribisi, just some members of a whole fleet of followers within Hollywood, all devoted to this rather manipulative organisation.

Cults prey on the vulnerable, attracting potential members with the promise of stability and security, and the smartest ones cleverly mask the fact of their core to reel in new people, something that even worked on Colman Domingo.

Although he didn’t reveal the name of the organisation, the award-winning star who broke into the mainstream with a role in Fear the Walking Dead once admitted that he was charmed by a nice group of people who tried to recruit him, which led him to discover that this friendly lot was actually a cult. I guess when he puts it that way, it’s easier to see how someone might fall headfirst into the arms of something like that.

“I almost joined a cult in Mexico City, but that’s another story,” he said on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, adding, “It was just a group of nice people, and then I was like, ‘Wait a minute, this is weird’. I was like, ‘What’s up with you guys?’”
