Unification Church Leader Han Hak-ja Requests Detention Review

Han Hak-ja, the Unification Church leader detained on the 22nd, reportedly requested a review of detention legality from the court on the 29th, arguing that the detention decision was unjust. The court must decide on release or dismissal within 48 hours of receiving the request.
According to legal sources, Han’s legal team submitted the request to the Seoul Central District Court on the same day. Earlier, the special counsel team led by Min Joong-ki, investigating allegations against Kim Keon-hee, requested a bench warrant for Han on the 18th. Four days later, on the 22nd, the court issued the warrant after a substantive review, citing concerns over potential evidence destruction.
Han is accused of delivering luxury items worth 80 million Korean won, including a Graff necklace and a Chanel bag, to Kim through Yun Young-ho, former global head of the Unification Church, and Jeon Seong-bae, a shaman widely known as Geonjin, between April and July 2022, alongside lobbying for church-related issues.
Additionally, Han faces charges of transferring 100 million Korean won in political funds to Kweon Seong-dong, a People Power Party lawmaker, in January of the same year, and donating 210 million Korean won from church funds to the People Power Party’s metropolitan and provincial offices ahead of the presidential election. He is also suspected of instructing Yun to destroy evidence in preparation for a police investigation into allegations of overseas gambling.
During the prior substantive review of the arrest warrant, Han’s legal team argued for non-detention due to health reasons, and similar claims are expected in the detention review.
Meanwhile, the special counsel team summoned Han and Kweon separately for questioning on the same day.
