The show Wayward does a lot to delve into the troubled teen industry, and the reason it hits so hard is because it’s so scarily accurate. Tall Pines Academy has parallels to programs like The Academy at Ivy Ridge, Okeechobee School, Dozier School For Boys, and various other schools within the World Wide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools (WWASPS).
The attention to detail is unsurprising as creator Mae Martin describes the show as “very personal.” They were a troubled teen, which they mentioned in their interview with Newsweek. When speaking to OUT Magazine, they also revealed the way that their childhood friend inspired the show. They said:
