Texas judge puts Alex Jones’ media empire up for sale, for real this time

Nearly 13 years after a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 children and six adults dead, the far-right media empire that falsely claimed it was a hoax may finally be headed for a sale.

On Wednesday, a Texas district court appointed a receiver to oversee the sale of Free Speech System, the parent company of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ far-right media outlet Infowars. The receiver will be responsible for selling Free Speech Systems’ assets, including Infowars. The sale of the company is intended to help Jones pay the more than $1 billion in damages owed to the families of Sandy Hook victims.

“I’m more worried that as time and time passes, justice is denied,” Travis County District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble, who is overseeing the case, said during proceedings.

The appointment of the receiver is yet another blow to Jones, who Texas and Connecticut juries found guilty of defamation in 2022 after he claimed multiple times that the 2012 shooting was a hoax on his show. The juries awarded the families of Sandy Hook victims a blockbuster settlement of nearly $1.5 billion, of which Jones has yet to pay a single cent. Gamble’s Wednesday ruling deals only with the Connecticut jury’s judgment. She set another hearing for September, where she’ll decide if the Texas jury’s ruling should also be put into receivership.

Wednesday’s ruling clears the way for satirical news outlet The Onion to once again try to buy Infowars.
