Scientology’s plan to buy downtown roadway in Clearwater delayed

Since December, the Church of Scientology has been working on a plan to purchase a downtown roadway in Clearwater. When the City Council gave a tentative nod in favor last month, it appeared there was no competition.
But a last-minute proposal submitted to the council Thursday afternoon halted those plans until May 15.
Brooks Gibbs, in partnership with the Clearwater African American Foundation, presented a proposal for a memorial that would honor seven “heroes” of the African American community and have a fenced-in park and a vintage playground.
The memorial would be named after Mack Dixon, who was a prominent leader in the African American community.
He estimated the cost at half a million dollars, and the council approved a motion to extend proceedings until next month to give project coordinators additional time to refine their plan.
“I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but I have a strategy, we have a great team,” Gibbs, who runs a local investment committee, told the Tampa Bay Times after the motion was approved. ”I can answer every objection.”
