Six individuals have been remanded in police custody after they were arraigned at the Akure Magistrate Court in Ondo State.

This was revealed via a court ruling by Magistrate Sunday Adedapo on Tuesday, January 21.

The accused individuals are 28 year old Ogunseyila Oladimeji; 30 year old Olabode Ojo; 30 year old Adeola Bero; 20 year old Olayemi Ayodele; 20 year old Ijalade Femi; 42 year old Ijarotimi Taye and two sisters whose names are Bisi Gbenga and Esther Gbenga.

The police charged the defendants with five offenses: conspiracy, cultism, murder, illegal possession of firearms and unlawful possession of a vehicle.

Inspector Nelson Akintimehin, the police prosecutor, informed the court that the defendants, along with others still at large, committed the crimes between Monday, January 6 and Wednesday, January 8 in Owo town, Ondo.

He accused the defendants of being members of the Alora and Ave secret cults.

The prosecutor further stated that the defendants used firearms and other dangerous weapons to commit the crimes.

Akintimehin explained that the alleged offenses violated Sections 516, 319, and 430 of the Criminal Law of Ondo State, 2006, as well as Sections 1(1) and (2) of the Secret Cults and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law of Ondo State, 2006.

Due to lack of jurisdiction, the court did not allow the six defendants to enter a plea.

The prosecutor, in a written application, requested that the court remand the defendants at the Olokuta Correctional Centre until the Director of Public Prosecutions provides guidance on the case.

The defense team, led by Daniel Onu, requested an adjournment in order for each defendant to file a counter-affidavit in response to the prosecutor’s application.

Considering the nature of the offense, Magistrate Sunday Adedapo granted bail to the seventh and eighth defendants in the amount of N500,000 each, with one surety for each defendant in the same amount.

Magistrate Adedapo also ordered that the remaining six defendants be kept in police custody until the next hearing.

The case was adjourned to Monday, January 27 for a response to the affidavit and a ruling.
