A new Netflix documentary Raël: The Alien Prophet takes a deep dive into what appears to be one of the biggest media scams of the 21st century. The 4-part Netflix series was released on February 7, 2024, and quickly rose to the Top 10 Television chart on the giant streaming platform. The engrossing documentary chronicles the more than 50-year history of Frenchman Claude Vorilhon, who sparked massive media attention for claiming to be a prophet of an alien race he called the Elohim. He eventually gained a following and became known as the apparent “Last Prophet” named Raël.
Raël notably became the subject of a worldwide legal and ethical issue of human cloning. He and his trusted Raëlian partner Brigitte Boisselier claimed to have created the first-ever human baby clone in 2002. Despite his status as a cult leader who was run out of France by the media, Raël continued to amass followers in North America through an invented promise that the Elohim were planning to visit Earth. As is the case with most cult leaders, Raël is exposed as a charlatan in the new Netflix documentary which reiterates the dangers of obscure religious cults and those who lead them.
