Robson Green and Jerome Flynn, the stars of ITV’s drama Soldier Soldier, never anticipated their rise to pop stardom. Their rendition of ‘Unchained Melody’ on the show in November 1994 captivated audiences and caught the attention of a young Simon Cowell.
After months of persuasion, Cowell finally convinced the duo to record the song. The actors, under the name Robson and Jerome, signed a deal and made history.
Robson Green made his television debut in Casualty in 1989, but it was his role as Fusilier Dave Tucker in Soldier Soldier that catapulted him to fame. The now 59 year old actor found the sudden fame challenging and ended up in a “very dark place”.
In a heart-to-heart with The Mirror, actor Robson Green candidly disclosed his struggles with addiction for the very first time in 2021. He recounted: “I was just 26 years old when real fame came knocking at my door with a drama called Soldier Soldier watched by 21 million people.”
The star reflected on embracing celebrity life, saying: “I was enjoying fame. I was enjoying recognition, I was enjoying all the approval. I was enjoying the awards, I was enjoying the parties, I was enjoying the drinking and everything else that went with fame.”
