This podcast puts a bizarre Blue Mountains cult in the spotlight

Sydney Morning Herald journalist Tim Elliott and the creator of The Nurse podcast, Camille Bianchi, team up in this 10-part exposé that dives into the establishment and continuing operation of contentious religious sect (some say cult) the Twelve Tribes.

Hidden in plain sight as a business operator in the laid-back Blue Mountains hippy town of Katoomba, the Tribe lures its members in with a promise of a simpler life. What unfolds is a bizarre tale of alleged child abuse, coercive control and the unlawful concealment and disposal of dead babies.

Unlike comparable shows that take a retrospective look at cults of the past, Inside the Tribe concerns a contemporary group in the process of trying to divest itself of assets and under investigation by police after the relatively recent death of its leader.

Elliot and Bianchi interview several former members and investigators across three continents and examine the legal challenges for authorities trying to grapple with high-control groups.

Early adopters of the podcast reported the weekly drip of episodes for non-paying listeners was frustrating; in the age of binge series, who has the patience to wait? But you won’t have to restrain yourself, as all episodes, including three bonus updates, are out now.
