The cult leaders, who attracted hundreds of believers to an illegal multi-level organization saying they “promise eternal life,” were sentenced to prison in the first trial.

On the 13th, Judge Kim Gil-ho of the Seoul Southern District Court sentenced co-leaders Bae (65) and Na (73) to six years in prison and three and a half years in prison, respectively, on charges of fraud and other charges.

A group of people who were tried with them were also sentenced to prison.

“The defendants operated a multi-level organization and injected false beliefs using their desire to have peace and salvation,” the court said. “The damage is very serious, such as destroying normal human relations by giving victims a false speculative spirit and blurring economic ideas.”

Bae and Na are accused of signing up believers as salespeople of unregistered multi-level vendors from 2016 to March 2024 and intercepting them by receiving 3.2 billion won from 562 people.

Bae also had a history of being sentenced to prison in 2011 on charges of illegal multi-level sales.
