Psychic spies, Scientology and the CIA: Uncovering California’s secret mind wars

Almost immediately, “curious” data started to emerge: Subjects began describing secret locations thousands of miles away with frightening accuracy. Others reportedly levitated small weights with their minds, while some allegedly controlled temperatures and read information inside sealed envelopes. One man, Patrick Price, who later became known as the SRI’s “psychic treasure,” was especially prolific.

For instance, Price, though sometimes correct, would also provide vague and erroneous information, officials lamented. Experiments were also difficult to replicate, and as a result, the media — and the scientific community — treated projects like Stargate with skepticism and hostility. News outlets like the Washington Post called them “futuristic fantasies” and “voodoo warfare,” and while local reporters approached the subject with cautious intrigue, they also rightfully noted its prominent ties to Scientology: Many high-ranking members worked at SRI and participated in research efforts, which prompted at least two government agencies to pull funding for the program, they wrote.
