North Korea reveals first-known Kim Jong Un sculpture, boosting personality cult

North Korean state TV has revealed a new sculpture depicting Kim Jong Un at a groundbreaking ceremony, in what appears to be the first such artwork of the country’s current leader.
“A statue of Chairman Kim Jong Un appeared this time on Korean Central Television (KCTV), and to our knowledge it was the first time this has been identified,” an official from Seoul’s Unification Ministry told reporters during a briefing on Tuesday.
However, the official noted the artwork differs from the statues of former leaders placed across the country for “idolization and veneration,” adding that there are still no known examples of full-fledged statues of Kim Jong Un.
The new work of art appeared in a KCTV program on Saturday reporting on the Ninth Party Congress participants’ follow-up activities in Pyongyang.
The state broadcaster showed the delegates touring museums and viewing exhibits at the National Book and Art Exhibition at the Korean Art Gallery, including the previously unseen sculpture.
The artwork appears to be modeled after Kim Jong Un pressing a blasting button at a groundbreaking ceremony of a local development project, highlighting his ongoing pursuit of new regional development and construction initiatives across the country.
It is not a full-scale statue depicting the leader’s entire body and is cut off at the knees. A red base supports the artwork.
State media didn’t disclose its actual size but it appears to be smaller than average North Korean men, judging by KCTV footage of congress delegates walking past it.
