A new podcast examines the dark beginnings and meteoric rise of the fitness sensation SoulCycle, the beloved high-intensity indoor cycling class called an obsession, a cult, and even therapy. Once the center of the fitness zeitgeist in New York City, it attracted celebrities, the wealthy and the elite.

“It was club culture meets fitness meets guru meets self-help,” explains the narrator in the exclusive trailer for the new seven-part podcast Cult of Body & Soul.

Featuring anonymous interviews with former instructors, many of whom were idolized, the podcast takes an exhaustive look at the all-consuming SoulCycle obsession, including what went on behind dark studio doors.

“We were all hot and wild, and some of us homewreckers,” says one former instructor.

Another says, “I am so adored by this community, I can say whatever the f— I want, I can do whatever the f— I want.”

The same anything-goes attitude inside the studio found its way out. As one instructor recalls, “A lot of the instructors partied hard; I mean, mean partied hard. So the young ones would stay out all night doing God knows what — a lot of drugs — and then coming in, popping an Adderall and then, like, getting on the bike spinning a million miles an hour.”
