Police in Mombasa have arrested two women linked to the controversial Zion Fire Anointing Ministries Church in Changamwe.
The arrests come following allegations that the institution has been operating like a cult with extreme teachings.
Their arrests came days after security officers rescued more than 20 people, including children, from the church premises.
According to investigators, the two women, believed to be senior members of the church, were detained after a dramatic confrontation at the compound.
The women allegedly tried to block officers from accessing the premises, hurling insults and threatening journalists who had accompanied the police.
What are the allegations against Mombasa church?
Witnesses said one of the suspects grabbed a rod and attempted to attack a reporter before police intervened.
The two then tried to escape in a car but were intercepted barely 500 metres from the church gate and are currently being interrogated as police dig deeper into the church’s activities.
Meanwhile, the church’s founder and self-proclaimed prophetess, Elizabeth Kadori, popularly known among her followers as Nabii Betty, has denied any wrongdoing.
She accused the police of harassment and claimed the operation was conducted under false assumptions.
