Mayor faces backlash over intended proclamation

Milledgeville Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan is facing flack on social media this week about what was to be a proclamation honoring Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. The proclamation was to be presented at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, but since the public outcry, the proclamation has been removed from the meeting agenda. The proclamation was intended to honor Hubbard on March 13, his birthday.
Several social media posts indicated that some residents plan to attend the City Council meeting and respond to the agenda item. However, Parham-Copelan told The Union-Recorder in a telephone interview Wednesday that since the proclamation has been removed from the agenda, no one from the public will be allowed to speak about it during the public comment portion of the meeting. City policy stipulates that public comment during meetings can only be about items that are on the meeting agenda.
Parham-Copelan said she takes full responsibility for what happened. She said a prepared proclamation was sent to the city by someone named Massimo Perrino. “I do not know this woman,” Parham-Copelan said.
