Lori Vallow Daybell’s murder conspiracy trial is nearing its end. What to know

Lori Vallow Daybell said she did not plan to present a defense against the conspiracy to commit murder charge she faces in Arizona.
Daybell, who was representing herself, made the assertion April 17, as she and Maricopa County prosecutors worked through outstanding questions of law in a juryless courtroom.
Her decision not to put on a defense cleared the way for closing arguments to begin April 21.
Over seven days of testimony, prosecutors presented their case against Daybell, alleging she and her brother, Alex Cox, conspired to kill her former husband, Charles Vallow, in July 2019.
The prosecution argued the killing was part of a broader scheme rooted in personal, financial and religious motivations.
As part of preparing for closing arguments, the parties reviewed jury instructions. Judge Justin Beresky confirmed the jury would be allowed to consider three justifications for Vallow’s death that would absolve Daybell: self-defense involving deadly physical force, crime prevention and defense of a third person.
